Total time: 45 min - 1 h
Ingredients (4 servings):
ground beef (extra lean, about 450 g)
betel leaves
1/2 onion
1/2 carrot
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 cups of uncooked rice
olive oil
soy sauce (optional)
Method:
Part 1 (5 min)
Defrost ground beef (1) or simply let it thaw in the fridge overnight. Place the ground beef in a large bowl. Measure out the rice (2). Put some water in the pot (3) and wash it by stirring with your hands (4). Decant the wash water (5) and add appropriate amount of water (I usually add 3/4 cup of water for 1 cup of rice, but check your rice cooker manual). Set the rice to cook (6).
Part 2 (15 min)
Wash the betel leaves in tap water (1) and place them on a large plate (2). Peel and then dice the carrot (3). Dice the onion (4). Measure out the pepper, salt, and sugar and make sure you have all the ingredients (5). Add all the ingredients together in the large bowl containing the ground beef and mix (6).
Part 3 (40 min)
To make the rolls, first take pinch off a betel leaf (1). Then turn the leaf over on its back side and place a teaspoon of meat in the center of the leaf (2, 3). From the pointy end of the leaf, roll it up (4, 5). With the stem of the leaf, pierce a hole through the roll to hold the roll together (6). Repeat this process until you run out of meat or betel leaves (7). Add 1 teaspoons of olive oil in a frying pan and turn on medium heat. Add the rolls to the frying pan (8). Cook them on both sides until the meat inside is cooked (9) (this takes about 10 to 15 min). You can check if the meat inside is cooked by chopping a roll in half.
Serve with rice and soy sauce.
