Shepherds pie recipe
Here's a shepherds pie recipe you'll love. Ever since I was a kid, when I get gloomy or crave for comfort food, shepherd pie is the way to go! All it takes is a bowl of shepherds pie while sitting in front of the tv :-p.
The first layer consists of ground pork (with a pinch of nutmeg, salt and brown sugar) and peas. Peas are especially beneficial in providing iron, vitamin A,C, and B9.
The second layer consists of crispy corn, and it is then topped with mashed potatoes. With this combination, you will end up asking for more servings :-p.
In this shepherds pie recipe, any order is fine (chopping onions first or heat the peas first, etc) as long as you have the 3 main layers. I recommend you start with potatoes though because it takes longer to boil them!
On a final note, you can certainly replace the ground pork with ground beef (with the addition of beef broth for extra taste).
Total time: 1 h
5 white potatoes
1 1/2 tablespoon butter
kernel corns from a can (type: crisp) (341ml)
1 cup of peas (540 ml)
1 finely diced onion
ground pork (about 600 g)
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Part 1 (30 min)
(1) Peel the potatoes, wash and cut into chunks. (2) Boil the potatoes in salted water in a pan until it is soft (when the fork can run through the potatoes smoothly). (3) Drain and in a separate bowl, mash the potatoes and, (4) add milk and butter along the way until it is soft. (5) Heat the kernel corns in a pan (1-2 mins), then drain the kernel corns from a can and set aside in a bowl. (6) Drain the peas and then heat the peas in a pan (1 mins), then set aside in another bowl.
Part 2 (15 min)
Tip: How to dice an onion faster. (1) First you cut one side leaving the other end (brown tip). (2) Cut it in half, (3) then with half of the onion, slice the sides all the way around (leaving a few cm away from the brown tip). (4) As shown here, the brown tip holds the onions together. (5) Chop the onions (perpendicular to the initial slices) and you will see that keeping the brown tip will speed up the process of cutting finely diced onions. Repeat with the other half of the onion. (6) Cook the onions in a pan for 1-2 min and set aside in a bowl.
Part 3 (1 h)
Take it out of the oven and let it cool.
(1) Add oil to the pan. (2) Cook the ground pork until it is no longer pink (ensure that the ground pork is cut into smaller chunks while cooking). (3) Sprinkle salt and brown sugar (roughly 2 teaspoon and 2 teaspoon respectively) to the ground pork, and add nutmeg and mix. (4) When the ground pork is cooked, mix with peas and onions. (5) Add margarine around the casserole and place the ground pork mixture at the bottom of the casserole and spread it out evenly. (6) Layer it with the corns and spread it out evenly. (7) Place the mashed potatoes as the top layer (above the corns) and spread it out evenly. (8) add a hole (using chopsticks or any other tool) in the middle of the shepherd’s pie and pour a bit of milk in it (to soften the pie). (9) Place it in the oven for 45 min at 375 degrees Fahrenheit or until you see the top layer form a lightly brown color.
Serve and enjoy!
